Golden South Classic raises the bar for Pediatric Sports Medicine

On Friday, May 29th and Saturday, May 30th, nearly 400 of the nation’s top high school athletes gathered here in Orlando to compete in the 33rd Annual Bert M Warden’s Golden South Classic, presented by adidas(R).
The weekend kicked off with the event’s first ever Welcome Reception and Expo, hosted by SeaWorld Orlando.  Guests were first treated to a gourmet reception courtesy of Collins’ Catering at the host hotel, for a preliminary meet and greet. Once at SeaWorld, vendors and sponsors were on site with giveaways, samplings and interactive experiences.  All guests were welcomed to participate in educational breakout sessions before heading out into the park to ride the newest Orlando thrill ride – Manta!

On Saturday, track and field enthusiasts were treated to a spectacular day of competition as not one, but two long standing meet records were broken!  Local competitor, Octavious Freeman (sophomore) not only won both the women’s 100M and 200M for the second straight year, but also set the new meet record with a time of 11.48 in the 100m.  Meanwhile, Jack Whitt, a senior from Oklahoma set a meet record with a soaring height of 17’-10” in the pole vault and came close to setting a new national record.

A very special moment came when Brandon Brown, a former Arnold Palmer Hospital sports medicine patient, achieved a remarkable 6' mark in the high jump (see picture below).  Brandon traveled from Michigan to compete and reunite with the APH team who surgically rebuilt his damaged ankle and saved his foot from amputation in 2008.     Funds raised through the Golden South event will support the Pediatric Sports Medicine Program at Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children.  The event is expected to surpass $70,000 (net) for 2009.

Special recognition is due to the outstanding sponsors whose contributions supported this year’s event, including The Bert W. Martin Foundation, renewed presenting sponsor, adidas, gold sponsor, Kohl’s, silver sponsor, Track Shack Foundation, beverage partner, Coca-Cola, medical partner, USA National Training Center and bronze sponsor, Raymond James Financial.

Nearly 200 officials and volunteers donated their time and talents to facilitate the day’s event, under the direction of our outstanding executive committee.  Thank you to the many team members for their support and participation.
