2007 Event Recap
The best athletes in men’s and women’s high school track and field gathered in Orlando on June 2, to compete
in the 31st Annual Golden South Classic, presented by adidas. More than 400 athletes from the United States,
Jamaica and the Bahamas competed, once again making this year’s event one of the nation’s most prestigious
track and field meets.
At the event, recently retired Orlando Sentinel journalist Bill Buchalter was honored with a lifetime service
award for over 40 years of youth athletics journalism excellence and Golden South committee membership. He has
been covering the Golden South Classic throughout the event’s history and will be inducted into the Florida
Sports Hall of Fame.
The Golden South Classic was a great success, thanks to dedicated sponsors, including new presenting sponsor
adidas, The Bert W. Martin Foundation, Track Shack Foundation,
Coca-Cola, and more than 100 officials and volunteers who donated their time and talents.
Funds raised through the 2007 Golden South event were designated to support the initiatives of Champions
for Children, which includes the Children’s Emergency Department & Trauma Center and the Kid’s Kidney Center
at Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children (Orlando, FL). Beginning in 2008, Golden South proceeds will support
the Pediatric Sports Medicine Program at Arnold Palmer Hospital.
